Let's Celebrate a Reading Moment!

It's time to CELEBRATE This Week with Ruth Ayres from Discover. Play. Build.  Every week Ruth invites us to share our celebrations from the week and link up at her blog. What a fun way to reflect on everything there is to be thankful for.

This week I'm celebrating a reading moment!

*throws confetti*

Last night, I was writing while Peanut practiced his math on the computer. Chad was upstairs with Little Bean so I listened to Peanut talking to himself as he worked on his math. Afterwards, we went upstairs to find that Little Bean was already asleep. Peanut and I decided we would read in his room but we needed to pick a new book. Somehow we both remembered that we had the 2nd in Erin Soderberg's The Quirks series so I went and found it. I laid down on the floor of his room, ready to read, thinking he would climb into bed. Instead, he grabbed his blanket and snuggled up next to me, our heads touching as I held the book up over us and read aloud to him. I read and we talked about fun words like gloat and talked about the characters and their quirkiness.

A couple of weeks ago I was worried that he's not really finding chapter books that he wants to read on his own. I texted Katherine Sokolowski all freaked out. I want him to read on his own and help him find books he can read but I was feeling like we were in this weird place of him being able to listen at a higher level than he can read and struggling to find great books for him to read.

But I didn't need to stress out. He's been reading Jarret Krosozcka's Lunch Lady series and he even grabbed one of Eric Wight's Frankie Pickle which I've suggested he read a few times. He loves non-fiction and reads that, too but I've noticed that he's reading more and more harder texts on his own.

And then I thought about the books we've read recently and how excited he was to snuggle up next to me and listen to me read and I know it's all okay. He's in 3rd grade now and I plan to keep reading aloud as long as he'll let me and it just fills my heart to know he's the reader he is right now. He makes me proud.

What are you celebrating this week?
