Let's Celebrate My Vintage Mac!

It's time to CELEBRATE This Week with Ruth Ayres from Discover. Play. Build.  Every week Ruth invites us to share our celebrations from the week and link up at her blog. What a fun way to reflect on everything there is to be thankful for.

This week I'm celebrating my vintage Mac!

*throws confetti*

Today I said goodbye to my vintage Mac.

It was time.
It was almost seven years old.
Eons in laptop life

It was a day off of school in January of 2009 when it came into my life. After choosing out my Macbook at the Apple Store, my husband and I decided to change things up a bit and not go to any of our Chicago deep-dish favorites. Instead, we had lunch at California Pizza Kitchen. Not wanting to leave my brand new laptop in the car in the middle of a Chicago winter, I brought it into the restaurant where it sat next to me in the booth as I ate my four cheese and tomato pizza and I gushed over its cheesiness (these were my pre-vegan days).

Afterwards, we went home and I carefully lifted it out of the box and spent the rest of the day trying everything out.
Since then, I've written hundreds of blog posts. I've tweeted my heart out. I've drafted and revised a novel. I was so close to finishing the draft of my second novel when it just couldn't take any more. Don't worry! I was able to get all of my files off of it...but I'll finish my second first draft on a different laptop.

I asked the man at the Genius Bar today if it was done.

I knew it was the end.
I've known it was coming.
It's going to be okay.

But I still fought back tears as he nodded and then shook his head.

All those years ago,
in that very same store,
I bought a laptop
my first ever laptop
my very own laptop

thanks to my Mamita.

My grandma Mamita gave each of her grandchildren a small amount of money when she sold her home to move into a smaller house. She wanted us to have it then, asking us to use it for something special. And I did.

But it wasn't until I sat at the Genius Bar with my hand on my laptop, facing the reality of having to say goodbye, that I remembered how grateful I was to have the extra money from Mamita to be able to buy it. At the time, Peanut wasn't even two yet. He was in diapers and in daycare full-time. Buying a brand new Macbook was more of a luxury than a necessity.

I'm proud to say I put it to good use!
It's been all over the country
from Vegas to Boston
Minnesota to Florida
many a Starbucks
and one beloved laundry room.

I know it was just
a laptop
a machine
a device.

But
my fingers
won't move across those keys again
or hold Mamita's hand.

I fought back tears as he nodded and then shook his head.
When I asked the man at the Genius Bar today if it was done.
And I said goodbye to my vintage Mac.

What are you celebrating this week?
