Week 1 - February 10 - February 16
What do you think is special about reading aloud?

Reading aloud is special because it brings people together to share a story. At home, we usually cuddle up when we read aloud. I have to wait until everyone is snuggled and settled before my kids let me start to read. At school, I love to see students leaning in close to the story when a book is opened, like they want to be closer to story that unfolds. They know the magic a book holds inside.

Reading aloud is also powerful because it allows us to learn from the story we share - to talk about how we treat each other and ourselves and to make decisions based on what we know about humanity. When I think about life in general, I think about the relationships we develop and the love we give and receive. At the end of the day, I hope I have made a difference in someone's life. Sharing stories and reading aloud is about learning about ourselves and others so we can know how to be better human beings. I love reading aloud with kids and asking them to think about how a character is feeling or asking them to think about what choice they would make if they were in a character's shoes. Reading aloud lets us have those discussions about feelings and decisions.

Reading aloud is the best any parent or teacher can do for a child. Reading aloud offers a shared experience and facilitates discussions about hoer we treat others but it also gets kids ready to read. When listening to a story, kids hear what a fluent reader sounds like, they hear examples of complex text and high vocabulary and hear elements of story. It's just awesome.

This year I'm excited to be reading aloud on World Read Aloud Day. One of my favorite 1st grade teachers has agreed to let me read aloud for her class on March 6th. I have a few other friends in mind to ask if I can read to their class that day, too. At home, we are planning a fun read aloud night. I think it might be time to host our Dragons Love Tacos book party with a taco bar for some of Peanut's friends! It seems like a good a time as any to cross off that activity on my Bookish Un-Boring List of 2013

What do you love about reading aloud? What are your plans for World Read Aloud Day? If you don't have plans yet, share some ideas and we can brainstorm together!
