He stands on the couch, a controller in each hand. His tongue sticks out the side of his mouth and his hips wiggle back and forth. I watch him wave and jerk his hands all over the place. Peanut is having so much fun playing Disney Infinity. It's adorable to watch him and see looks of concentration, exhilaration, and pure joy cross his face.

I remember when my parents first bought us Nintendo. We were so excited for that 8-bit Nintendo and loved to play as much as they would let us. My neighbor and I would and play Mario together. He was also the kind of kid who threw his whole body into the game. I dodged a few wild moves as he tried to jump over caverns or squash those little Koopa Troopas. And we could play for hours, too.

My kids didn't get Disney Infinity for Christmas but two of their cousins got it and they were in love. Me, not so much. This whole Disney Infinity business is not like the simple Mario games I played when I was young. I'm still trying to figure out the whole point of Disney Infinity. I loved the games where you were thrown into a world and given a mission - either it was to get to the end and later to complete missions to get stars. I miss those stars. Disney Infinity is a totally different kind of game.

I've loved Nintendo since I was little. After the 8-bit, we had Super NES and then Nintendo 64. Gamecube came out when I was in college, but I would play when I came home for breaks. And when Nintendo Wii came out - even though we were newlyweds and didn't have any kids yet - we bought the Wii.

When it comes to video games, things have definitely changed over the years. Part of me wants to be cranky over this Disney Infinity business because I don't get the point of it...not to mention it seems they've figured out a way to get people to spend even crazier amounts of money than before. (You can't just buy the game, now you have to buy all the figurines and power discs to get further into the game.) And I desperately wish he was playing in the snow or cuddled up reading books instead of all the craziness that comes with video games.

But part of me also sees how happy Peanut is. He's absolutely loving it. He plays with me or his dad and it's fun to talk to him about where to go next or what to try next. I can see the little wheels and gears moving around in his head as he makes decisions and I know he's at least thinking things through and creatively trying to problem solve. Not to mention he's so proud of himself when he accomplishes something.

For me it's definitely been a realization of how things change but how they also stay the same. Games have evolved over time but they still give families the opportunity to spend time together. They still allow us to think, experience new ups and downs, celebrate our triumphs and deal with our defeats. I never expected to have Disney Infinity in our house but knowing that my kids are happy and that we are able to all join in on the fun makes it worth it.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading? 1/6/14

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!
It's Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It's also a great chance to see what others are reading right now...you just might discover your next “must-read” book!
Kellee Moye, of Unleashing Readers, and I decided to give It's Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children's literature - picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit - join us! We love this meme and think you will, too. We encourage everyone who participates to visit at least three of the other kidlit book bloggers that link up and leave comments for them.

Last Week's Book Adventures:
Jen Says: Being home for winter break should mean more reading, but with two kiddos to play and laugh with, it's been tricky to find time to read. I'm still listening to Fangirl and still reading The Summer of Letting Go. We did make it to the library and I did get an awesome stack of books to read. I'm excited that my 2014 picture book reading is at least off to a good start! I did read Will & White by Laura Lee Gulledge. It had been a while since I had read a graphic novel and it was super sweet.

Jen Says: I'm planning to continue listening to Fangirl and to continue reading The Summer of Letting Go. We're discussing the last chapter in Deliverology 101 at work on Friday so I'll finish that this week, too.

The Snatchabook

Title: The Snatchabook
Author: Helen Docherty
Illustrator: Thomas Docherty
Publisher: Sourcebooks Jabberwocky
Publication Date: October 2013
Genre/Format: Fiction/Picture Books
GoodReads Summary: Where have all the bedtime stories gone?

One dark, dark night in Burrow Down, a rabbit named Eliza Brown found a book and settled down...when a Snatchabook flew into town.
It's bedtime in the woods of Burrow Down, and all the animals are ready for their bedtime story. But books are mysteriously disappearing. Eliza Brown decides to stay awake and catch the book thief. It turns out to be a little creature called the Snatchabook who has no one to read him a bedtime story. All turns out well when the books are returned and the animals take turns reading bedtime stories to the Snatchabook.
What I Think: I can't imagine if our books started disappearing! Little Eliza Brown has to get to the bottom of the mystery when books start disappearing all over the place. I completely can't blame her. I enjoyed how this book celebrates snuggling up and reading stories but also compassion. When Eliza finds the Snatchabook, she helps figure out how to include him in read alouds instead of having him keep ferreting books away.
It's so easy to misunderstand people and their actions but Eliza shows us how listening and understanding the root of the problem can go a long way in solving the problem. I also thought it was great that the Snatchabook was able to open up to Eliza and that she was able to help him. This book is a sweet read with potential to spark some interesting conversations.

And every child in every bed,
listened hard to each word said."

This week I'm celebrating 2013 and 2014 Challenges!

*throws confetti*

In 2013, I had a few challenges I set for myself and am excited for 2014 challenges! Here's a recap from 2013 and new challenges for 2014.
Donalyn proposed a Book Gap Challenge on Nerdy Book Club and I jumped in. I read almost all of my book gap books! I just missed The Princess Bride

Here are books I'm challenging myself to read for the Book Gap Challenge:
1. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte - read 7/27/2013
2. Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor - read 9/23/13
3. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery - read 10/9/13
4. Hatchet by Gary Paulsen - read 9/24/13
5. The Princess Bride by William Goldman
6. The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery - read 06/30/2013

2014 Book Gap Challenge!
For 2014, I'm going to keep filling in my book gaps! Here's my 2014 list!
1. The Princess Bride by William Goldman
2. The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway
3. Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan
4. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
5. The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare

I'm joined Alyson and her Kid Lit Frenzy's Non-Fiction Picture Book Challenge  with the goal to continue to review a non-fiction book every Wednesday. I definitely discovered some great non-fiction picture books and plan to continue this for 2014. If you are looking for great non-fiction, I recommend checking out Kid Lit Frenzy and all the bloggers who link up with their non-fiction reads!
Well...I said my challenge was a little crazy for 2013 when it came to the number of books I hoped to read...and it ended up being crazy because I just didn't get there. I challenged myself to read 365 picture books - one a day - and then to read 213 non-picture books this year for a total of 578 books. It just didn't happen. While I read every day with my kids, it's hard to keep up with a new book every day and we just didn't get there. We did read a lot of books though! Here's a slideshow recap of my book pics from 2013...for as long as I kept up with the book pics at least!
2014 Reading and Running Challenge!
In 2013, I read 234 books. I actually think I read more but I don't think I did a good job of recording all of my picture book reads on GoodReads. It's kind of hard to pick a number now! I know I can do more than 234 this year. The question is, can I do 400? 400 seems like a good number. I hoped to read 578 last year but read 234...so 400 seems kind of in the middle and enough of a challenge PLUS, Franki challenged people to run 400 miles in 2014. I'm thinking 400 miles of running and 400 books...which kind of reminds me of Colby's running/reading challenge last year. I think it'll be fun and even if I don't get there...at least I can say I tried! Another part of Franki's #runteacherrun challenge is to run 4 races this year and I've already signed up for one. I have two more I'm hoping to run and then I'll have to find one more.

As a side note, if you are interested in sponsoring me, I'll be running in the Race to Wrigley 5k and raising money for Lurie's Children's Hospital in Chicago. I'm going to run in honor of my (former) student, Michelle, who you might remember from my post about meeting RJ Palacio, author of Wonder. Michelle is such an inspiration and I'm so glad to have her in my life. I can't believe that she's a sophomore in high school now! She's amazing and I'm happy to celebrate her by running and raising money for Lurie's. To donate on my fundraising page, click here.
Latinos in Kid Lit is hosting a challenge to explore books that feature latino/a characters. I've thought about diversity a lot lately so when I saw Linda Baie talking about this, I thought it would be great to join in. I'm excited! The goal is to read one book per month. I'll add the books I read to my 2014 Challenges page.

I'm super excited for these challenges and for everything I've planned on my 2014 Un-Boring List! Do you have any books to recommend for my Latinos in Kid Lit challenge? I would love to hear your favorites!

What are you celebrating this week?

My 2014 Bookish Un-Boring List Reveal!

In 2012, I wrote my very first Un-Boring List after I was inspired by my friend, Alison and her Un-Boring List. You can see everything I checked off of my list from 2021 here. It was so much fun that I did another list for 2013 except I posted it here and put a bookish spin on it. On Saturday, I shared how I fared on my 2013 Bookish Un-Boring List! And now, it's time to unveil my 2014 Bookish Un-Boring List! Hooray!
