It's Monday! What Are You Reading? 11/11/2019

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!

It's Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Kathryn at Book Date. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It's also a great chance to see what others are reading right now...you just might discover your next “must-read” book!

Kellee Moye, of Unleashing Readers, and I decided to give It's Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children's literature - picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit - join us! We love this meme and think you will, too. We encourage everyone who participates to visit at least three of the other kidlit book bloggers that link up and leave comments for them.

Last Week's Book Adventures:
I finished listening to Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward and it was gorgeous and sad and healing all at the same time. I started listening to Refugees by Alan Gratz and I also started reading After The Shot Drops by Randy Ribay.

I haven't spent as much time with Milk and Honey or The Wild Robot Escapes but I still have them and hope to finish them up this week.

Upcoming Book Adventures:
This week I'm hoping to finish up everything I started but it's quite a busy week so we'll see how it goes! I was in New York this weekend and got to visit the Strand bookstore where I picked up America Is Immigrants by Sara Novic which I'd like to explore as well.

Last Week's Book Adventures:
I finished White Fragility this week and Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling. I also listened to Sadie by Courtney Summers. Whoa. It's a book version of the podcast Serial and really well done. Just as sad and definitely as intense as Monday's Not Coming but really good and worth reading.

My younger son and I have also been listening to The Wild Robot Escapes by Peter Brown

Upcoming Book Adventures:
I started listening to Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward and have been reading Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur. I also have Refugees by Alan Gratz to listen to as well. (I feel like I'm the last person on earth who hasn't read it!)

Last Week's Book Adventures:
Okay...last week I listened to Monday's Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson and let me tell you, it's intense. It's a book that jumps around from the present to the past to the future and all around over and over again until you get to the big thing that happened and what happened becomes clear. It's described as a thriller about murder, neglect, and systemic racism and it truly had my heart racing. And aching. I'll be including this in my presentation at NCTE for Build Your Stack which is about intersectionality in YA.

I also listened to Carry On by Rainbow Rowell and started listening to White Fragility. My audiobook game has been on point and I've read so many really great books these last few weeks.

Upcoming Book Adventures:
I'm going to keep listening to White Fragility and then I have Wayward Son on hold so I hope that comes soon! I also want to listen to Sadie by Courtney Summers if I have time.

I finished listening to On The Come Up by Angie Thomas this week. I loved it soooo much! It's tied with With The Fire On High right now for my current favorite book. They are both amazing! I also read the Poe graphic novel and am excited to share it with students.

Upcoming Book Adventures:
I have Kiss Number 8 to read and Monday's Not Coming that I would like to read this week. And so many more! There are always too many books!

Last Week's Book Adventures:
I finished listening to With The Fire On High by Elizabeth Acevedo and it is so good!!! One of my students is also reading it so we've been talking about it all week. After I finished it, I started listening to On The Come Up by Angie Thomas. I read more of Juliet Takes a Breath and started the graphic novel Making Friends by Kristen Gudsnuk

And I can't forget that I also read a No More Independent Reading Without Support by Debbie Miller and Barbara Moss. It's part of Heinemann's Not This, But That series. I meant to order No More "Look Up The List" Vocabulary Instruction a few weeks ago and got the independent reading one instead. I decided to keep it and buy the vocabulary one too. Now I've read them both and really find them helpful. They are super short texts. They're hyper focused on the facts and the research and then ideas for what to do instead. Sometimes I wish they gave a little more explanation of what to do and/or how exactly to do it but for the most part, I appreciate that they get to the point and are very explicit about what not to do, what to do, and why.

Upcoming Book Adventures:
I'll be listening to On The Come Up this week and reading more of Juliet Takes a Breath and Making Friends. I also grabbed a Poe graphic novel that I want to take a look at and a friend recommended a professional text that he's been reminding me I absolutely need to read so I'm going to try and get to that as well.

Last Week's Book Adventures:
This week I finished listening to Station Eleven and then also listened to The Ocean At The End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. I just started listening to With The Fire On High by Elizabeth Acevedo. Both Neil and Elizabeth narrated their books which I think makes it extra special. I also read the graphic novel Moonhead and the Music Machine by Andrew Rae. One of my students who is a musician liked it so I wanted to read it too. I also read more of Juliet Takes a Breath.

Last Week's Book Adventures:
Gah! I'm not even sure where last week went! I read lots of picture books which is super exciting but I didn't read much of my novel. I'm reading One Is For Piñata by Roseanne Thong and John Parra to kick off Hispanic Heritage month. My 7th graders looked at the CCBC diversity stats for Latinx #OwnVoices books published in 2017 in children's literature last week and I asked our local librarian to pull Latinx books for us to explore this week.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th - October 15th and I'm excited to look at what it means to be Hispanic versus Latinx and to hopefully be able to grow my students' thinking when it comes to understanding Latin American history. Sounds like I need to share some of my ideas and resources in a blog post...

Upcoming Book Adventures:
I'm planning to keep reading The Other Half of Happy by Rebecca Balcárcel and Keep Going by Austin Kleon. AND GUTS COMES OUT ON TUESDAY! I was talking to my cousin's daughter about it over the weekend and we're going to see who can finish it first and then we're going to get together to talk about it. Cannot wait! And I can't wait to share it with students!

They Call Me Güero: A Border Kid's Poems

Title: They Call Me Güero
Author: David Bowles
Publisher: October 22nd, 2018
Publication Date: Cinco Puntos Press
Genre/Format: Realistic Fiction/Novel in Verse
GoodReads Summary: Twelve-year-old Güero is Mexican American, at home with Spanish or English and on both sides of the river. He’s starting 7th grade with a woke English teacher who knows how to make poetry cool.

In Spanish, “Güero” is a nickname for guys with pale skin, Latino or Anglo. But make no mistake: our red-headed, freckled hero is puro mexicano, like Canelo Álvarez, the Mexican boxer. Güero is also a nerd—reader, gamer, musician—who runs with a squad of misfits like him, Los Bobbys. Sure, they get in trouble like anybody else, and like other middle-school boys, they discover girls. Watch out for Joanna! She’s tough as nails.
But trusting in his family’s traditions, his trusty accordion and his bookworm squad, he faces seventh grade with book smarts and a big heart. Life is tough for a border kid, but Güero has figured out how to cope.
What I Think: David Bowles is one of my Latinx heroes. I appreciate everything he shares on Twitter and his overall essence. Maybe it seems weird to say but I've seen him on panels at NCTE and was at a roundtable session with him and he has a great energy. He knows a lot about Latinx history and the current state of Latinx affairs and he's passionate about sharing his ideas but he does it with such grace that he feels like an awesome big brother who is looking out for all Latinx people. If you don't already follow him on Twitter, I definitely recommend doing that.
As I was reading this book, I could hear David's voice on every page. I could also see my students and my family and myself. That's pretty amazing. Güero gets into lots of different predicaments and learns a few things along the way but I loved getting to know him, his friends, and his family.
In the snatch of text below, I enjoyed his description here and that he includes a simile even but I particularly love the idea of how words we hear transform into the way we live going forward. What an awesome image. As a mentor text, you could share this with students and ask them to think of their own similes to describe stories or advice they've received in their lives. In my Story Exploratory workshops, I talk a lot about how people, places, and experiences shape us and this is a great example of how people impact our lives whether we realize it right away or not.
Snatch of Text:
"Just think ---
I owe it all to those stories
my abuelita used to tell us
sitting in her rocking chair
as we shivered and thrilled.
Even then, words were burrowing
into my brain and waiting,
like larvae in a chrysalis,
to unfold their paper wings
and take me flying into the future." (p. 20)
