We are about half way through Brown Girl Dreaming with both of my classes. This weekend I started listening to Best Nerds Forever by Chris Grabenstein and James Patterson on audiobook. 

This Week's Adventures:

I'll finish listening to Best Nerds Forever this week and then I might dive into rereading Austin Kleon's books for something inspirational but simple.

Last Week's Adventures:

Gah! I have come to realize that when I pick a book that I'm not jiving with...I don't get reading done. I'm making the executive decision to pause listening to Lupe Wong Won't Dance. I've been listening in Spanish and I think that's why I'm struggling. I have to pay a lot more attention in Spanish and that means it's not as fun. I'm also reading Equity-Centered Trauma-Informed Education by Alex Shervrin Venet and it's so great but it's a lot of deep thinking which I can only handle so much of right now!

This Week's Adventures:

I'll keep reading but I did also check out Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson and I've liked everything I've read by her so I might have more luck with it then the others right now.

I forgot to post last week! I listened to Fake ID by Lamar Giles and read Quincredible and Be More Chill as a graphic novel. I was so happy to do some short reads. That has been my key to success with any kind of reading lately. 

This Week's Adventures:

I'm now listening to Lupe Wong Won't Dance/Lupe Wong No Baila and reading Success is for You by David Hawkins and Equity-Centered Trauma-Informed Education by Alex Shervrin Venet. This week I listened to I'm Not Dying With You Tonight - soooooo good! And I also finished listening to A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow. I had started it but never finished it. I loved the book but the fantasy part of it had me a bit confused. Not sure if it was me not paying enough attention or the way it shifted but it took me a long time to figure out the fantasy part of it. I also started listening to Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas.

This Week's Adventures:

I'll finish listening to Concrete Rose this week and then I'd like to listen to Lupe Wong No Baila (Lupe Wong Won't Dance) by Donna Barba Higuera. I'm still reading After the Shot Drops because I am just not the best at physical books lately but I'd love to know what happens in the story so I'd love to make it a priority.

Well, Firekeeper's Daughter was amazing! I finished listening last week and started listening to Sanctuary by Raola Mendoza and Abby Sher.

I'm interested to listen to more of Sanctuary and I have Miles Morales: Shock Waves which is a graphic novel from Justin A. Reynolds and Pablo Leon that I'm super excited about.

I ended up re-reading Monster by Walter Dean Myers. I actually listened to it and it was great how they brought it to life on audio. I also started listening to The Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley.

I'm really into The Firekeeper's Daughter and am excited to read more. I also really need to read Sanctuary!

This week I explored a few books as mentor texts: Biográfico Kahlo by Sophie Collins, Ida B. the Queen by Michelle Duster, and Bad Girls Throughout History by Ann Shen. They were all so great! Each unique in their own way and with lots to think about in terms of content and how they formatted the information. 

This Week's Adventures:

For real, I really need to read Sanctuary by Paola Mendoza and Abby Sher! And I also am excited to read What Would Frida Do? by Arianna Davis. It is back-to-school week for me! We have an institute day on Wednesday and students come Thursday! I am so excited to start my 20th year in education!

This week was a busy week but I did read The Dire Days of Willowweep Manor by
Shaenon K. Garrity and illustrated by Christopher J. Baldwin. It was so fun to dive into a graphic novel and this one was a blast.

This Week's Adventures:

I definitely need to read Sanctuary by Paola Mendoza and Abby Sher before school starts on the 12th and I also have two Frida books: What Would Frida Do? by Arianna Davis and Biográfico Kahlo by Sophie Collins (this one is in Spanish!).

Last week I listened to more of A Song Below Water and read Counting Descent by Clint Smith. Whoa. It's seriously so good and there are a lot of poems I'm going to use as mentor texts for our identity unit to start the school year. I also read Layers of Learning and essays from Roxane Gay in Hunger. I also read Awkward and I have no idea why I never read that series before. It was so cute!
