Last Week's Book Adventures:
Over the weekend I reread Celia Perez's The First Rule of Punk. In Spanish, it's La Primera Regla del Punk and I'll be reading it aloud with my 7th graders so I wanted to make sure I had the story fresh in my brain. I ready more of Time Traveler's Wife...it's a longer book than I remembered! Last week I also read John Lewis last essay to my students, Together, You Can Redeem the Soul of our Nation

This Week's Book Adventures:

I'm still listening to The Gravity of Us and still reading The Time Traveler's Wife and I'll be rereading La Primera Regla del Punk with my students.

Last Week's Book Adventures:
I'm so close to finishing Incendiary by Zoraida Cordova and I highly recommend it. Believe it or not, I started reading Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. I've loved the movie Ten Things I Hate About You ever since it came out back in the 90's and I was thinking about it this weekend. Despite reading Shakespeare and taking a class in college, I've never read Shrew so I pulled out my Shakespeare anthology and started reading.

Last Week's Post:

This Week's Book Adventures:

I'll finish up Incendiary this week and I plan to keep reading more of The Taming of the Shrew. I'll be sharing Carmen Lomas Garza's Family Pictures, Naomi Shihab Nye's Gate A-4, Mina Javerherbin's My Grandma and Me, and Sara Farizan's "Why I Learned to Cook" from the Fresh Ink anthology with students this week as we work on our personal narratives. I can barely contain myself! These texts are fantastic and I'm so excited to share them!

Frayer a Friend Fun

Last year I started the school year with the Frayer a Friend activity from The EduProtocol Field Guide Book 1: 16 Student-Centered Lesson Frames for Infinite Learning Possibilities by Marlena Hebern and Jon Corippo. I discovered it last year - possibly from Ditch That Textbook on Twitter and it was a hit!
I decided to try it again this year, realizing I could put my students into breakout rooms and they could create it digitally. Last year I printed the Frayer a Friend template but this year, I just added a text box for them to drag over their friend's name and I made a copy for each of them via Google Classroom.

We did have to go over the idea of talking to each other and having to chat with each other to get the information but they did a great job and now we try to guess who the secret classmate is everyday. We do 1-2 a day and it's fun to try and deduce who it has based on what we're learning about each other.

I do have to admit that I got busy with other things and forgot to do Frayer a Friend in one of my classes last week and the students reminded me. Y'all, that really tells me this is a hit. Plus it's a slam dunk for me because I was able to introduce the Frayer model in an easy and fun way. Now when we use it for vocabulary, the'll already be familiar with it.

Want to know more about Frayer a Friend?

Grab the template from Ditch That Textbook hereLaura Steinbrink shares here how she used Frayer a Friend with Kahoot! And Keith Pedzich blogged about using it here.
