Week #1 - Teachers Write Sunday Check-In 2016

Hooray! We made it through week one! Happy dance with me! It feels so good to be back in the Teachers Write swing of things. I've been looking through Teachers Write posts from previous summers and have been keeping up with Kate and Gae and Jo's posts and I'm having so much fun. I was actually in Guatemala until super late Wednesday night so I'm excited for my first "real" week of Teachers Write now that I'm home.

Because I'm such a fan of mentor texts, I'll be sharing mentor texts I've used in my own writing at Sunday Check-Ins this summer. In the spirit of writing what you are, I'm sharing one of the Pure Michigan ads below. I'm not from Michigan...but I did grow up near Lake Michigan and we spent lots of time at the beach. I love the mood of these commercials and try to capture them in my writing. Can you think of a mentor text for the tone or mood of what you're working on?

"The perfect summer has a voice
If we listen close enough we can hear it.
It whispers, one more game, one more swim, one more round.
And it speaks softly through the cool nights
Murmuring one more log, one more marshmallow,
one more walk along the shore.
The perfect summer is waiting.
The perfect summer is Pure Michigan."

You might have noticed that I'm in my closet in this video! I actually happen to like writing in my closet believe it or not! But I also love writing in my laundry room or at Starbucks. I've blogged about where I write before and you can read my posts here:

where I talk about getting to it and that ultimately it's about BIC - butt in chair.
where I answered the question Where Do You Write?
where I talk about my beloved laundry room.

My Teachers Write Recap:
I'm moving back and forth between to projects at the moment but I've realized I need to stop biting off more than I can chew and to zone in on revisions of my first novel so I can query. So that's my plan for this week - to revise again. Seriously, friends, I have revised this novel so much! But I'm keeping at it. I'm hoping to get in two hours each day...we'll see how that goes! And maybe I'll get brave and send a few queries out just for fun. I'm just so happy for Teachers Write!!!

A reminder of my rules for Teachers Write Sunday Check-Ins:
1. We respect each other and the type of writing we do.
2. We only offer constructive criticism.
3. We are positive and encourage each other at all times.
4. We recognize and maintain this as a safe environment.

Today, in the comments:
How did you do this week? Did you meet your weekly goal(s)?
What was the pit of your week? (The hardest part, the not-so-fun part?)
What was the peak of your week? (The best part, the most-totally-fun part?)

Do you have a mentor text for tone or mood that influences what you're writing?
What are you looking forward to and planning for the week ahead?
P. S. Thank you for replying to each other's comments!
While I read them all and do my best to reply and
reply as soon as possible it doesn't always happen.
I so appreciate you cheering each other on through Teachers Write! You r-o-c-k!

Psst! Yes, you! One more thing...
