It's Monday! What Are You Reading? 06/27/2022

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!

It's Monday! What are you Reading? is a weekly blog hop I co-host with Kellee and Ricki from Unleashing ReadersThe original IMWAYR, with an adult literature focus, was started by Sheila at Book Journeys and is now hosted by Kathryn at The Book Date.

It's a great way to share what you're reading and get recommendations. We encourage you to write your own post sharing what you’re reading, link up below, leave a comment, and support other IMWAYR bloggers by visiting and commenting on at least three of the other linked blogs.

Last Week's Adventures:
Last week I finished listening to The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern and if anyone has read it, please let me know! I feel like I need to let it marinate but also read it three more times. That's all I got to for my listening life last week but I did finish Thirst by Varsha Bajaj and it was a really lovely book. I think there is a lot of space for students to learn about access to clean water around the world.

I also finished reading Seeking Wisdom by Julia Cameron, it wasn't my favorite but there were some good and important prompts and overall a reminder that morning pages are meaningful. I also have been exploring tarot so I've been reading Kitchen Table Tarot by Melissa Cynova and some other art books from the library.

This Week's Adventures:

Guess what came in at the library on Friday? Kelly Barnhill's book When Women Were Dragons and I feel like it came at exactly the right time for me. I'm going to drop everything and read that this week.

Last Week's Adventures:
This week I finished listening to What Happened to You? but I'm still listening to The Starless Sea. I finished reading Strong as Fire, Fierce as Flame and it was so great. I read some of 12 Notes on Life and Creativity but focused mostly on What Lane? which I finished.

I am SO pumped about being able to read more! It is refreshing and making me realize how hard it has been to read these last two years. I'm so grateful for this summer and time to slow down.

This Week's Adventures:

This week my goal will be to finish listening to The Starless Sea and then to listen to Pax by Sara Pennypacker. I'd like to also listen to Amari and the Night Brothers if I can.

As far as books, I'd like to finish 12 Notes on Life and Creativity and make progress on On Becoming a Person and then I have Thirst by Varsha Bajaj.

Teachers Write will be starting up on July 11th. You can sign up here. I'm participating in Open Write with Ethical ELA and have enjoyed the prompts so far. It's 5 days of prompts that are worth checking out. You can find them here.

OPEN WRITE: Poetry Treasure Hunt

This week I'm joining Ethical ELA for a 5-day writing opportunity for teachers. It's called Open Write and there are posts with a prompt everyday. Teacher writers are invited to try the prompt and share in the comments. Today the prompt was to gather found items from outside and the invitation was to use write found poetry inspired by #teachinglivingpoets' We're going on a treasure hunt!

I meant to look for things while walking Perdi or when we went out to eat for Father's Day but I ended up finding a snatch of text from an interview I listened to. It was Michael Silverblatt interviewing Zadie Smith about On Beauty and it was too perfect not to write down.

On How To Be Human

It's summer
And I can read again
I can write again
I can create again

I have headspace
And I'm not used to it
Sometimes I scroll on my phone
Sometimes I feel listless

Other times I get busy
And I crave more
Like I'm watching YouTube
But I'm also listening to an interview

Like I'm programmed to do all the things at once
And then I'm struck with beauty
Words that are so true
Words that I feel so deeply

The reading of novels and poetry
was instruction
on how to be human
Michael Silverblatt's voice sears
straight to my soul

I stop
And listen to them again
Write them down
Read them one more time

It's summer
And I can read again
I can write again
I can create again

OPEN WRITE: Things You Can Do With a Garden Hose

I've followed Ethical ELA for a while now and this week I noticed that they have a 5-day writing opportunity for teachers so I decided to join in. It's called Open Write and there are posts with a prompt everyday. Teacher writers are invited to try the prompt and share in the comments. For the first day, the prompt was from Allyson Berryhill and the invitation was to use Ally Visser's poem Things You Can Do With an Orange as a mentor text. I used the wheel to spin a noun and got "garden hose" so here's my poem.

Things You Can Do With a Garden Hose

celebrate
for summer is here

time to
unwind
let loose
release the kinks

time to
quench
the lawn
the flowers
the garden
your thirst and your soul

time to
slip and slide
sprint through the sprinkler
splash a sibling

time to
fill a bucket
a baby pool
water balloons

and celebrate
for summer is here

Can you tell I'm so excited that summer is here? I am reveling in the time to be still and quiet and to be outside and to read and write and visit with friends.

Last Week's Adventures:
It for sure feels like summer around here! I realized it was okay to sit down and read a book. It's amazing how I got out of that practice recently. I read two YA graphic novels this week: Check Please! Book 1: Hockey by Ngozi Ukazu and Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe. I also read more of On Becoming A Person by Carl Rogers and I still listened to several audiobooks. I finished The One and Only Bob by Katherine Applegate and Starfish by Lisa Fipps and I started What Happened to You? by Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Bruce D. Perry and The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern.

I'm feeling so energized by all of these books and am excited for more reading fun this week!

This Week's Adventures:

My goal is to finish listening to What Happened to You? and The Starless Sea this week and then I have 12 Notes on Life and Creativity by Quincy Jones that I'd like to read. I have two Global Read Aloud books to explore: Thirst by Varsha Bijaj and Strong as Fire, Fierce as Flame by Supriya Kelkar...among others!

Last Week's Adventures:
I read more of On Becoming a Person by Carl Rogers and finished listening to How The Word Is Passed by Clint Smith. I also listened to Other Words For Home by Jasmine Warga and I'll definitely be adding it to my classroom library!

Last week I visited Bannockburn School where I'll be teaching 6-8 Language Arts next year. I got to meet the current 5th-7th graders and one of them shared a manga that HE wrote. I read that as well! I'm so excited to dive into manga more. I've had students who loved it in the past and it's time for me to explore more.

This Week's Adventures:

I'm excited to spend a few hours at the library this week exploring new picture books. I also have The One and Only Bob by Katherine Applegate, Starfish by Lisa Fipps, and Pax by Sara Pennypacker all ready to listen to on audiobooks. We'll see how much I get to!
