The One With Kwame Alexander and Being a Star #sol18

This month, I'm participating in the Slice of Life challenge with Two Writing Teachers. If you want to participate, you can link up at their Slice of Life Story Post or you can head on over there to check out other people's stories and follow along with the fun. For more information on what a Slice of Life is about, you can go here

Sarah Kay got me thinking about what I could write about for my own spoken word poetry. Chief the Poet got my thinking about what's important to me as a mom - both how I show my kids I love them but also how I'm hoping to help them grow up and be great human beings. And that got me thinking about Kwame Alexander and his song Be a Star from his book The Playbook: 52 Rules to Aim, Shoot, and Score in This Game Called Life.

We went as a family to hear Kwame speak last spring and he ended by singing this song with Randy. It's a gem of a call and repeat song that's worth listening to over and over again.

Since then, I sing this song everyday to my kids...or if not, I at least remind them to be a star everyday. They love to roll their eyes at me but I know it's important to keep reminding them to trust and know themselves and to believe in themselves and to share their awesomeness with others.

I love my kids.

I love being a mom.

I love getting to be part of their lives.

There is no better gift.
