Poetry Friday - Imagine

Today Poetry Friday is at Carol's Corner

I was excited to wake up and know that it was my tenth wedding anniversary...and then I started reading through all my social media favorites and saw people celebrating the Supreme Court decision to rule in favor of same sex marriage and it made the day ten times better.

The words to John Lennon's Imagine popped into my head.

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

I've always loved this song but it's especially perfect today. I had to pull it up on Spotify and listen to it again and again. As I listened, I thought about how great  this song would be as a writing prompt. It would be perfect to make connections between current events and the state of the world when John Lennon wrote the lyrics. But it would also be great to ask students to think about what they dream about and start their free writes with, "Imagine..." and then dream up anything they want. I'm glad we don't have to imagine a country where anyone can marry whomever they want. That makes me feel like dreaming matters.
  1. Imagine
    John Lennon
  2. Imagine there's no heaven
    It's easy if you try
    No hell below us
    Above us only sky
    Imagine all the people
    Living for today...
    Imagine there's no countries

    It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
    Imagine no possessions

    I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
    A brotherhood of man
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer

But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
