It's Monday! What Are You Reading? 05/14/12

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!
It's Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It's also a great chance to see what others are reading right now…who knows, you might discover that next “must read” book!
After doing the meme for a couple of weeks, we realized this would be a fun meme to start up with a kidlit focus - anyone reading and reviewing books in children's literature - it can be picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, you name it in the world of kidlit and it's in! We have loved being a part of this meme and we hope you do too!  We encourage everyone participating to go and visit the other kidlit book bloggers that link up and to comment on as many posts as you can. We love talking books and believe in sharing and discussing what we're reading. We hope you join us!

Last Week's Book Adventures:
Jen Says: I just finished Tom Angleberger's Fake Mustache! It was so funny. It's hard to even describe because it was just a wild, whirlwind of a book, but it was totally fun. I definitely recommend it and think kids will love it. I also finished Jack Ferraiolo's The Big Splash and Allan Wolf's The Watch That Ends the Night. Both completely opposite kinds of books. The Watch That Ends the Night is historical fiction about the Titanic and it was beautiful. It was interesting how he wove the stories of so many different people on the Titanic together. It's amazing how there is still so much intrigue in the Titanic 100 years after it's sinking. I was also impressed by how much the book moved me even though I, obviously, knew how it was all going to end.

I also read three graphic novels this week that were so much fun: Bake Sale by Sara Varon and Teenboat, Dave Roman and John Green, and The Big Fat Cow That Goes Kapow by Andy Griffiths. I am having so much fun discovering new graphic novels!

I even got in a nice picture book #bookstack over the weekend, too! My favorites were The Emma Dilemma by Kristine O'Connell George and I Spy Under the Sea by Edward Gibbs. Both were awesome and I definitely recommend them.

Kellee Says: Well, my life seems to be getting busier and busier. Sometimes it is so hard to juggle professional, personal and reading obligations and the month of May has had so many professional and personal things going on that I seem like reading has been pushed aside a bit.  While I am aiming to read 4 novels a week, this week I only finished 2 and just started a 3rd. A little off, but I know that my #bookaday over the summer will make up for it.

This week I finished Why I Broke Up by Daniel Handler (Lemony Snickett) with paintings by Maira Kalman. It was a beautiful book that I loved very much- I loved the presentation of it, I loved the writing style and I loved the story. It is a book I would definitely recommend. I also read Stupid Fast which I will recommend to all of you HS teachers out there- students, specifically boys, will really enjoy this book- it is deeper than it looks.  In the audiobook world, I finished A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore and LOVED it! I truly enjoyed the humor and the story, so I cannot wait to read/listen to more of his stuff.

Upcoming Book Adventures:
Jen Says: My reading life this week is like a blank slate because I'm starting new physical books and new audiobooks. I am going to read Lions of Little Rock because I have heard so much about it and keep saying I'm going to read it. I gave Capture The Flag by Kate Messner to a student last week...so while I wait to get that back, I'll read Lions of Little Rock. I think I am going to start Passion by Lauren Kate on audio. I love this series and I love that I didn't find it until now so I can cruise through the audios. I just made another huge list of picture books to get from the library, so I'm hoping to grab those and read them this week! I'm looking forward to a week of being able to read more after the last couple of weeks I have had.

Of course, I am extremely excited about From What I Remember... by Valerie Thomas and Stacy Kramer that will be available on Tuesday. Listen up! I love this book! I read it on NetGalley and could not put it down. I was finding every single free second I could to read this book until I finally got to the end. I can't wait to own a copy on Tuesday! It is a perfect summer read. You want this book!

Kellee Says: First, WAY jealous of Jen for having Capture the Flag. Now onto business.... Today I just started Queen of the Water by Laure Resau and Maria Virginia Farinango which is about a girl living in an indigenous village in Ecuador.  I also started listening to Night Circus today on audio (YAY JIM DALE!) and cannot wait to get more into it.  This week, I also plan on reading (at least) Lumious by Dawn Metcalf which is quite the opposite of Queen of the Water
