It is awesome for inferring. I find graphic novels good for inferring as well, sometimes hard for me because there is so much to think about because it relies so much on the pictures. :)

This is one of my favorite books for teaching inferring. I find it is especially useful with parents who often think books are "too easy" for children. It's a great reminder of the thinking you have to do as you read. Love David Shannon!!

So many kids are enthralled by the Ripley's Believe It Or Not books...lots of pictures, but not much text. This book is a nice one to give to students to nudge them into reading nonfiction with more meat to it. Thanks for sharing!

I just finished this book and my review will be up on Thurs. Your review was very well thought out. I like the additional information you provide at the bottom as well. This book was lovely in a heart breaking sort of way. I was so glad to see Melinda grow stronger though.
You'll love Wintergirls. Her writing is so full of imagery, despite the fact that it can be disturbing imagery, the book was great.

I just bought Speak for my daughter who is a 9th grader. I bought it because I like the author but I have never read it. She told me it was a movie. We also discussed that the girl was assaulted. Your post has encouraged me to read it. She is also reading To Kill A Mockingbird for her English class and enjoying it. Have you read SOLD? It is the story of a child sold into prostitution in India. It was a choice on the summer reading list in the next town over from me and many parents complained. I read it and found it powerful but disturbing. Christine

Oh my gosh, I thought it was just me. I started reading this at a time when I was having lots of migraines too (which didn't help). It's one of the only books I stopped reading, and haven't gone back to. I kept thinking maybe I was losing my mind since I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on.

We visited an aquarium this summer. I wish that we would have read this book beforehand because I think that it would have helped put some things into perspective for my daughter. We don't live near the ocean, so I think that her understanding is pretty abstract.

Interesting interview, with great answers. I believe children with autism can enjoy reading, especially if the stories are visual and/ or relates to the interest(s) that the child has.

I definitely could go for the picturesque beach with margarita in hand for an ideal reading spot :-).
