It's Monday! What Are You Reading? 12/30/2019

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!

It's Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Kathryn at Book Date. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It's also a great chance to see what others are reading right now...you just might discover your next “must-read” book!

Kellee Moye, of Unleashing Readers, and I decided to give It's Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children's literature - picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit - join us! We love this meme and think you will, too. We encourage everyone who participates to visit at least three of the other kidlit book bloggers that link up and leave comments for them.

Last Week's Book Adventures:
It's the last Monday of 2019! I've already picked out my one little word for 2020 and am excited to celebrate the new year and the new decade. Believe it or not, I've read some of Juliet Takes a Breath but I'm not done yet! And I have overdue library books so I can't check out any new audiobooks. Gr. I've gotta work on that!

Upcoming Book Adventures:
I'm still working to finish up Juliet Take a Breath and After the Shot Drops. Happy end of 2019!

Last Week's Book Adventures:
There aren't too many Mondays left in 2019! Looking back now, the year seems to have flown by. In general it was a good year and definitely a good year for reading. This week I listened to more of The Night Circus. It's such a phenomenal book with great description but also amazing as an audiobook.

Upcoming Book Adventures:
My students are starting book clubs today so I'm going to be reading what they are reading so I can join in with discussions a little bit. Here's what they're reading: A Long Way Down, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Wave, Ghost Boys, and I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter. Can't wait!

Last Week's Book Adventures:
I just realized I forgot to post last week and I'm late posting this week! Ack! If you're here, thanks for being here! I've read a lot and it feels pretty awesome. So I read a couple of graphic novels: I Was Their American Dream by Maraka Gharib and The Dark Matter of Mona Starr by Laura Lee Gulledge. I also listened to Refugee by Alan Gratz, Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds (reread) and Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell. I started listening to The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern as a reread. I also have been reading When The Shot Drops by Randy Ribay.

Upcoming Book Adventures:
This week I'm hoping to finish up When The Shot Drops and to keep listening to The Night Circus. I have students who asked to read To Kill a Mockingbird so I said I would read it with them so we can discuss so I'm going to be reading that too.

Last Week's Book Adventures:
I finished listening to Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward and it was gorgeous and sad and healing all at the same time. I started listening to Refugees by Alan Gratz and I also started reading After The Shot Drops by Randy Ribay.

I haven't spent as much time with Milk and Honey or The Wild Robot Escapes but I still have them and hope to finish them up this week.

Upcoming Book Adventures:
This week I'm hoping to finish up everything I started but it's quite a busy week so we'll see how it goes! I was in New York this weekend and got to visit the Strand bookstore where I picked up America Is Immigrants by Sara Novic which I'd like to explore as well.

Last Week's Book Adventures:
I finished White Fragility this week and Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling. I also listened to Sadie by Courtney Summers. Whoa. It's a book version of the podcast Serial and really well done. Just as sad and definitely as intense as Monday's Not Coming but really good and worth reading.

My younger son and I have also been listening to The Wild Robot Escapes by Peter Brown

Upcoming Book Adventures:
I started listening to Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward and have been reading Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur. I also have Refugees by Alan Gratz to listen to as well. (I feel like I'm the last person on earth who hasn't read it!)

Last Week's Book Adventures:
Okay...last week I listened to Monday's Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson and let me tell you, it's intense. It's a book that jumps around from the present to the past to the future and all around over and over again until you get to the big thing that happened and what happened becomes clear. It's described as a thriller about murder, neglect, and systemic racism and it truly had my heart racing. And aching. I'll be including this in my presentation at NCTE for Build Your Stack which is about intersectionality in YA.

I also listened to Carry On by Rainbow Rowell and started listening to White Fragility. My audiobook game has been on point and I've read so many really great books these last few weeks.

Upcoming Book Adventures:
I'm going to keep listening to White Fragility and then I have Wayward Son on hold so I hope that comes soon! I also want to listen to Sadie by Courtney Summers if I have time.

I finished listening to On The Come Up by Angie Thomas this week. I loved it soooo much! It's tied with With The Fire On High right now for my current favorite book. They are both amazing! I also read the Poe graphic novel and am excited to share it with students.

Upcoming Book Adventures:
I have Kiss Number 8 to read and Monday's Not Coming that I would like to read this week. And so many more! There are always too many books!

Last Week's Book Adventures:
I finished listening to With The Fire On High by Elizabeth Acevedo and it is so good!!! One of my students is also reading it so we've been talking about it all week. After I finished it, I started listening to On The Come Up by Angie Thomas. I read more of Juliet Takes a Breath and started the graphic novel Making Friends by Kristen Gudsnuk

And I can't forget that I also read a No More Independent Reading Without Support by Debbie Miller and Barbara Moss. It's part of Heinemann's Not This, But That series. I meant to order No More "Look Up The List" Vocabulary Instruction a few weeks ago and got the independent reading one instead. I decided to keep it and buy the vocabulary one too. Now I've read them both and really find them helpful. They are super short texts. They're hyper focused on the facts and the research and then ideas for what to do instead. Sometimes I wish they gave a little more explanation of what to do and/or how exactly to do it but for the most part, I appreciate that they get to the point and are very explicit about what not to do, what to do, and why.

Upcoming Book Adventures:
I'll be listening to On The Come Up this week and reading more of Juliet Takes a Breath and Making Friends. I also grabbed a Poe graphic novel that I want to take a look at and a friend recommended a professional text that he's been reminding me I absolutely need to read so I'm going to try and get to that as well.

Last Week's Book Adventures:
This week I finished listening to Station Eleven and then also listened to The Ocean At The End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. I just started listening to With The Fire On High by Elizabeth Acevedo. Both Neil and Elizabeth narrated their books which I think makes it extra special. I also read the graphic novel Moonhead and the Music Machine by Andrew Rae. One of my students who is a musician liked it so I wanted to read it too. I also read more of Juliet Takes a Breath.
